Federal 50-Employee Count

Part-time employees can matter without each one counting as a full employee.

The useful question is not simply how many part-time people you have. It is whether their hours can add enough to change the federal count.

I'll show you how much those hours can add before you look at anything else.

Part-time employees count through their hours.

A part-time employee isn't a full employee in the federal count. Their hours are added together, capped per person each month, and converted. What matters is whether that total can close the gap to 50.

  • A good share of your workforce is part-time.
  • Their hours change from week to week.
  • You don't know how much they add to the federal count.

What I'll check first

You don't need the rule memorized. Give me the workforce facts and I'll work through it.

Other employees

How many other employees sit outside the full-time pattern.

Their hours

Roughly how many hours they work.

Full-time pattern

How many people were consistently at 30 hours a week or more.

You'll see what the part-time hours actually do

You will see whether the part-time workforce is irrelevant to the direction, clearly enough to change it, or the exact reason the 50 line remains unresolved.
